Black Peak Expedition – The Quest for the Black Cobra
Rising dramatically above the Garhwal Himalayas, Black Peak, also known as Kalanag, is the highest summit in the Bandarpunch range of Uttarakhand. Standing tall at 6,387 meters (20,955 ft), the mountain derives its name from the dark, cobra-hood–like appearance of its summit ridge that contrasts sharply against the surrounding snowfields.
Black Peak is one of the most striking mountains visible from several legendary Garhwal treks. Trekkers traveling through routes like Har Ki Dun, Bali Pass, and Ruinsara Tal often witness its imposing silhouette dominating the skyline. However, reaching its summit is a completely different challenge — one that demands endurance, technical mountaineering skills, and careful acclimatization.
The expedition begins from the quiet Himalayan village of Sankri, the gateway to many iconic treks in the region. From here, the trail follows the beautiful Supin Valley through dense forests, alpine meadows, and riverside camps before reaching the sacred Ruinsara Tal, a stunning glacial lake surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks.
As the expedition progresses toward Kyarkoti Base Camp, the terrain becomes increasingly alpine and rugged. The first clear views of Black Peak’s massive glaciated slopes create a thrilling moment for climbers — the objective now stands directly ahead.
From Base Camp onward, the route moves into true expedition territory across moraines, glaciers, and steep snow slopes. Camps are established progressively at higher elevations — Advanced Base Camp, Camp 1, and Summit Camp — allowing climbers to acclimatize and prepare for the summit push.
The summit climb itself is a demanding high-altitude challenge involving steep snow and ice walls, crevassed glacier sections, and fixed rope climbing. Those who reach the summit are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Swargarohini, Bandarpunch, and surrounding Garhwal Himalayan ranges.
The Black Peak Expedition with Pahadi Hikes is not just a climb — it is a complete Himalayan journey combining sacred landscapes, high-altitude adventure, and the raw thrill of standing atop one of the most iconic summits in the Garhwal Himalayas.
