The Kedarkantha Trek is one of the most celebrated winter treks in India, located in the serene Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Rising to an altitude of 12,500 feet, this trail is a perfect introduction to high-altitude trekking for beginners, while still offering enough charm and challenge to captivate seasoned trekkers.

Starting from the picturesque village of Sankri (in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary), the route takes you through dense pine forests, frozen lakes, open snowfields, and rustic Himalayan hamlets. The village of Saur—where the trek begins—is itself a delight, with wooden houses nestled amidst the snow-capped mountains and the shimmering Tons River flowing by.

What sets Kedarkantha apart is the 360-degree summit view, which reveals a stunning panorama of some of the most iconic Himalayan peaks, including:

  • Swargarohini I, II, III (6300 m)

  • Black Peak / Kalanag (6387 m)

  • Bandarpunch (6300 m)

  • Rupin & Supin Ranges

  • Khimloga Peak

  • Ranglana (5800 m)

  • Baraadsar Lake Range

It’s not just about the summit—sunrise and sunset from Kedarkantha are unforgettable, with the first rays of the sun kissing the snow-draped peaks in a fiery orange glow. Along the way, trekkers get to immerse themselves in Garhwali culture, interact with locals, and witness life in the remote villages of the Himalayas.

Whether it’s your first Himalayan trek or a return to your beloved mountains, Kedarkantha promises magic—the kind that calls you back again and again.
