Sarutal Trek

Start Point : Dehradun

End Point : Dehradun

The Sarutal Trek is an unexplored and pristine high-altitude trail located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary region of Uttarakhand, starting from the picturesque base village of Sankri. Unlike popular treks like Kedarkantha or Har Ki Dun that also begin from Sankri, Sarutal remains a well-kept secret, perfect for trekkers who seek solitude, raw nature, and untouched alpine beauty. The trail passes through dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron, vibrant mountain meadows (bugyals), and traditional Himalayan villages where time seems to slow down. Each campsite on the way offers a new backdrop — from lush green valleys to wide open grasslands under starlit skies.

As you gain altitude, the landscape transforms dramatically. The trek culminates at Sarutal Lake, a glacial alpine lake sitting quietly at around 4,200 meters, surrounded by snow-draped ridges and silence. The view of Himalayan peaks like Swargarohini, Black Peak (Kalanag), and Bandarpunch add grandeur to the journey. Since the route is less commercial and minimally frequented, it provides a pure trekking experience — ideal for those who have already done beginner trails and now wish to venture deeper into the wild.

The trek is of moderate to difficult grade, best suited for those with a decent level of fitness and prior high-altitude experience. It generally spans 7-8 days, with the best time to do it being May–June and September–October, when the weather is stable and the views are crystal clear. With its serene campsites, breathtaking scenery, and absence of tourist rush, Sarutal offers a rare chance to disconnect from the world and truly immerse yourself in the heart of the Himalayas.
